NEW WORK BY

             ECHIKO OHIRA

Upon first viewing Ohira¡¯s work there is a flood of ¡°warm and cozy feelings.¡±  Despite the choice of the color red, her pieces evoke a sense of comfort and intimacy.  Unlike the harsh traditionally oriental red, Ohira¡¯s red is a warm iridescent red that exudes a pearl-like glow when properly displayed under light.  Her red is meant to be a pure energy form capable of generating more energy and life.  They are reminiscent of recently hatched eggshells, which are indexical to the life that it had once contained.  They also have a cradling effect of a nest that provides a sense of security or natural comfort.  In these sculptures, is a definite feel of warmth, ease, and repose which is usually associated with motherhood and the life that is produced.

The array of collages also employ the use of this iridescent red to give off an anatomical touch.  Ohira uses paper, dyed thread, and graphite to create collages with an amoebic and biological effect.  This reference to cells pays homage to life, birth, and everything else that is natural.

Echiko Ohira is an artist born in Tokyo, Japan who currently resides in Pasadena, CA, who has exhibited widely since 1986.  She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts for the Musashino Art University in 1972.  Her work has been included in countless exhibitions not only within a group but also solo worldwide.
