WATERCOLOR BY LAWRENCE YUN
April 9 through May 14, 2005 The Sarah Lee Artworks & Projects is proud to present the debut of Lawrence Yun¡¯s latest series of exquiisitely rendered watercolor paintings of hybrid botanicals- flower studies that echo the great floral arrangements of 17th century Dutch and 19th century American painting, while incorporating decidedly contemporary twists and ironic conceits. California and other poppies of various colors grow on a single tree branch; and spliced, multicolored orchids issue from same roots. In a magnificient caprice, a seemingly suspended wreath contains at least seven different varieties of flowers and a cluster of berries. And a nest of vines contain some exquisitely rendered flowers and florets of different kinds set among a Coca-Cola can, a plastic top to a disposable coffee cup, a garden-hose nozzle, and other bits of civilized detritus. ¡°These images,¡± according to Yun, ¡° represent my observatiion of Universal technological and evolutionary living patterns, which appear as genetically-modified and biologically-enhanced experiments practiced throughout all aspects of life. Any thing in our time is possible.¡± In short, it is world in which things are spliced, grafted, interwoven, and mutated; all sustained through some of the most beautiful botanical studies of recent years. Lawrence Yun received his masters degree in painting, drawing and printmaking at California State Universit in Long Beach. And now teaches there. He has exhibited widely throughout Southern California in group and solo shows. The show is his first solo show in Los angeles in five years, and will be on view from april 9 through May 14, 2005.
